NIIT partners with edX to launch MOOC courses from MIT, W3C, Harvard & more


NIIT, a management and training solutions company for corporates and individuals has partnered with edX, an online learning platform to introduce Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) module in both their platforms. MOOCs are distance education programs with courses that provide video lectures, reading material, and online user forums.
The MOOC module will provide programs and courses in areas like programming languages including Python offered by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, HTML5 Offered by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C); data science & analytics from Columbia University, and data science & engineering courses from University of California, among others.
Certified courses and programs
For select courses, NIIT & edX will offer a pre-configured course content that includes MOOC modules, services from NIIT, and the certification exam from corresponding  Institutional partner. The partnership claims to provide a student or the learner with a genuine certificate from the concerned institute/university.
All courses will be offered jointly by NIIT in their learning centers and by edX on its online learning platform. These could be availed by students at the college, recent graduates or working professionals. Additionally, organizations and corporates in India can also avail MOOC course content through online and offline mediums by approaching NIIT or edX.
About edX
edX claims to be a non-profit, open-source learning platform offering online courses from more than 90 member institutions, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Berkeley University of California, among others.
Partnership with IIM-B: In July 2015, IIM Bangalore (IIM-B) had launched a series of free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in partnership with EdX. IIM-B had joined the open learning platform EdX in August 2014 and had said that it would make courses available within a year from then. As part of the membership, the B-school was to provide several of its courses on the edX platform for free.
Other developments in MOOC
-In December 2015, Khan Academy and Central Square Foundation launchedKhan Academy – Hindi. At that time, the company pledged to add more videos, practice exercises and tutorials in Hindi for free.
-In November 2015, online open course provider Udacity raised $105 million.
– In August 2015, Times Internet entered into a strategic partnership with Coursera, a massive open online courses (MOOCs) company, to ‘assist Coursera’s growth in India’. Times Internet also participated in Coursera’s Series C funding worth $49.5 million which took place in August.
– In April 2015, LinkedIn reportedly acquired online tutorials and training platform Lynda.com for $1.5 billion.
– In May 2015, the British Council launched a series of free MOOCs on IELTS and English for teachers and students on the FutureLearn platform.
-In January 2015, Delhi University launched its series of MOOC course that was made available worldwide, free of cost.
