5 Tips for Effective Time Management

If you are like most people then time management is a personal skill that can always benefit from improvement.
Most of the visitors to careerevolve.com are presently in a career and have either families or personal interests outside of work that keep them busy.  Now that you are considering adding an online course to the mix then perhaps you should revisit your time management skills to ensure they are as effective as possible.
We’ve identified 5 recommended tips for you to follow to help you manage your time wisely.

1.    Plan your week – spend time planning and organizing early in the week to make sure that you account for any tasks that are due or activities that you should initiate.  Having an understanding of what you will work on throughout the week can help you deal with those unexpected requests for your time.

2.    Prioritize – do not get overwhelmed by all of the tasks that you may identified for the week and make sure to prioritize your work.  Even the most effective time managers still can only one number 1 priority.  It’s ok if a task at a lower priority slips to next week but be sure to track it as a goal and plan for its completion.

3.    Vacums – reflect on any activities that can have their time optimized.  For instance, I actually do not drive to work and take public transit which is my time to catch up on personal emails and news headlines.  Maybe taking those five flights of stairs at work everyday is equivalent to the 10 minutes you reluctantly spend on the treadmill at the gym.

4.    Own it – take ownership of your own time.  I normally block out time intervals in my work calendar to actually deal with the workload that is assigned to me to ensure that I have focused time to do my own work.  Don’t use your calendar just for accepting appointments or meetings and use it to control the time you want to spend on tasks.

5.    Communicate – once you are able to effectively plan and control your time then you will be able to clearly illustrate if you are over utilized and can benefit from either sharing workloads or take on a new task.

Having effective time management skills is one way to guarantee an enjoyable work-life balance and can also help you evolve your career to take on the tasks that interest you the most.
